Advanta lobbied on credit card fees

Advanta Corp., which issues credit cards to small businesses, spent $643,000 in 2007 to lobby the federal government, according to disclosure form amended last week.
The company spent $332,000 in the second half of 2007 to lobby Congress on legislation related to credit card practices and transaction fees, according to the form posted online Feb. 20 by the Senate's public records office. The company amended a form filed earlier this month that mistakenly listed the year-end tally instead of its second-half spending, a spokesman said Tuesday.
Spring House, Pa.-based Advanta spent $311,000 in the first six months of 2007 to lobby on the same issues.
With Americans weighed down by billions of dollars in debt, Congress has put credit card practices and other consumer issues on its legislative agenda.
Lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches, under a federal law enacted in 1995.
